Studio 122 is located on the first floor of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning with three rooms. The net height under the interior beam is only 3.5m and the height under the board is 4.0m.
As an architectural studio, the space atmosphere and shape interest are important design objectives. Because of small area, many users, special environment and limited funds, design freedom is difficult to achieve.
The restriction of area forced us to think of vertical strategy -- setting attic space. We utilized the principle of flow space in a vertical way: the attic floor doesn’t occupy all the space, setting apart double height space in many places, using indoor space to form entrance, attic and ground three elevation. The spaces therefore produced vertical flow of interest.
In order to solve the traffic problem, we connected the attic on both sides with a "bridge", which enhanced the activity of the central space while realizing the spatial connection, and added a sense of layers in the limited depth of the building. The "bridge" connects two lofts while creating a "see and be seen" space.
Horizontally, we rotated the attic coordinate system by 15 degrees to create a second grid system. This "non-standard" coordinate system is in conflict with the "standard" coordinate system defined by four walls and beams, resulting in visual tension, which leads to the interest of the space. The upper and lower space flows, the rotation of the plane -- "freedom" is reflected in the motion.

122工作室位于建筑规划学院一楼,三开间,室内梁下净高仅为3.5m, 板下高度为4.0m。
作为建筑学研究室,空间氛围和形体趣味自然是重要设计目标。但面积小,人员多,环境特殊,资金有限,自由度难以实现。
面积的制约逼我们想到竖向策略——设置阁楼空间。我们将流动空间之原理竖向运用:阁楼空间不作满铺,在多处留出通高空间,室内形成入口、阁楼及地面三个标高,空间产生了竖向流动的意趣。
为了解决交通问题,我们将两侧的阁楼用“桥”连接,在实现空间联系的同时,增强了中部空间的活跃性,并在有限的建筑进深中增加了层次感。 “桥”不仅实现了两边阁楼的连接,也创造了“看与被看”的空间。
在水平方向,我们将阁楼的坐标系统整体旋转15度, 创造出第二套网格系统。这套“非标准” 坐标系统与由四面墙及两根大梁界定的“标准”坐标系统形成冲突,冲突导致视觉张力,而视觉张力则引出空间的趣味。上与下的空间流动,平面的转动——“自由”在运动中得以实现。
