华中科技大学的前身华中工学院于1953年建校，2012年学校在准备60年校庆活动时提出要建一座校史馆，当时的校领导原打算在校内择佳址建新楼。作为顾问，我提出将位于学校中轴线上、校内现存年代最久远的老机械实习车间改造为校史馆，经过几次研讨，校领导接受了我的建议。
在前期研究中我们发现，这批老建筑是由上世纪三四十年代留德归国的夏昌世教授等中国著名建筑师设计的，这更增加了我们的敬意。我们保留了南区的全部建筑和树木，极具50年代特色的老式木屋架也悉数得以保留，根据展览建筑对采光的要求，我们非常谨慎地改造了旧厂房的窗户，对存在安全隐患的旧结构进行了加固。新建内容极少：仅在院落入口处增设了大门，在院内增设了高标准的卫生间并根据使用要求更新了全部机电系统。
Huazhong Institute of Technology, one of the predecessors of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), was founded in 1953. In 2012, HUST proposed to build a history museum for its 60th anniversary. As a consultant, I proposed to transform the oldest mechanical practice workshop on the school axis into the university’s history museum. After several discussions, the university’s leaders accepted my proposal.
In the previous study, we found that these old buildings were designed by famous Chinese architects such as Professor Xia Changshi who returned from Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, which increased our respect towards the building. We preserved all the buildings and trees in the South District, as well as the old wooden frame of the 1950s. According to the light requirements of the exhibition building, we carefully renovated the windows of the old factory building and reinforced the old structure that affected safety. The new construction was very few: only a gate was added at the entrance of the courtyard, a high-quality toilet was added in the courtyard, and all electromechanical systems were replaced according to the use requirements.
